Weighted blankets have become hugely popular in the UK, down to its excellent comfort and weight, it feels like your being hugged, it is proven to help play a large part in getting a good night’s sleep. But what is a weighted blanket and who uses them?

How does it work?

They are designed to provide a light, evenly distributed pressure (deep pressure stimulation) on your body that mimics the feeling of being held or hugged. There is research around them benefitting people with anxiety, autism, and insomnia, among other conditions.

Anxiety is a major problem for sleep and this type of pressure has been shown to increase serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of sleep that has a calming effect.

A Study from Journal of Sleep Medicine & Disorders (2015) found that a weighted blanket helped those with insomnia sleep better, simply because it helped them feel more settled before bed.

Most people can use a weighted blanket and enjoy the benefits that can elevate stress, anxiety or sensory issues. The are great for ages 4 years old upwards. However, if you suffer with any medical conditions like a chronic respiratory or circulatory issues, asthma, low blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or pregnant,  it is advised to seek medical advice before purchasing one.
